Alex specialises in executive search for the retail supply chain in the Asia-Pacific region, focusing on supply chain, planning and logistics functions. He’s been with Proco for one year this month, so we asked him to reflect upon the highlights of his first year with the company.

Where did you work before joining Proco?
Proco Global was my first full-time job after university. I completed my degree and took a year off to study Mandarin in Beijing before returning to my hometown of Hong Kong.

What attracted you to Proco?
The first thing that struck me during the interview process was the relaxed, open and friendly nature of the office. Everyone I spoke with came across as down-to-earth, hard-working and fun individuals, so the values of the company became apparent to me from very early on.

What do you enjoy about your role?
One of the things I enjoy the most about my role is the opportunity to speak to highly successful professionals within their industries. Not actually being in the industry myself, I find it fascinating to learn first-hand through meetings and conversation with well-respected leaders in their fields about their industry, companies and the market today.

Since moving into a consultant role earlier this year, one of the things I’ve enjoyed the most is the level of trust I’ve been given to run processes on both candidate and client side, as well as the freedom to go build my own market. There’s definitely an entrepreneurial spirit to the company and it encourages consultants to think outside the box when it comes to developing networks.

What are some highlights of your first year at Proco?
I get a lot of satisfaction out of learning about new industries and markets. Having access to speak to high-calibre personnel within the retail supply chain has been hugely rewarding from a personal learning perspective.

All the social events Proco Hong Kong has put on throughout my time have been hugely enjoyable. One of the things I enjoy the most about Proco is that success is always recognised and rewarded. We’ve done quiz nights, VR simulators, wine tastings and scavenger hunts and they’ve all been such a great way to celebrate when we do well.

And lastly, closing my first deal!

How has Proco helped you in your career development?
Proco has allowed me to accelerate into a 360 consultant role within a year and I really appreciate that level of trust and the fact that my hard work has been rewarded. I’ve been able to learn fast, but also have been given plenty of space to make mistakes and learn for the next time.

What advice do you have for prospective Proco candidates?
If you’re looking for a company that values long-term development and hard work, then Proco is the place for you! Proco promotes a relaxed office atmosphere that encourages us to be successful. It’s also a company that treats its employees incredibly well with benefits, such as leave, incentives and awards.

What are three words that you would use to describe Proco?
Hard-working, fun and rewarding.

Has your idea of recruitment changed since joining Proco?
Yes, absolutely. I was under the impression that recruitment was all about KPIs, having as many phone calls per day as possible and very transactional. Proco has allowed me to see that recruitment, especially at executive search level, can be more about long-term relationship building and prioritising quality over quantity.

What do you think sets Proco apart from other recruitment companies?
Although admittedly I don’t have experience in other recruitment firms, I’ve no desire to see what else is out there. Proco has given me a platform to learn fast, be successful and have lots of fun in the process, all in an open and friendly environment.
